## What is lens distortion?

Lens distortion is when a photo bends shapes that are straight or in proportion in real life. A close phone camera makes the nearest feature, often the nose, look too big. Wide lenses stretch faces at the edges and bow straight lines. Lens distortion correction is the edit that puts those shapes back. It changes the shape of whatever the camera or lens bent: a nose, a face at the edge of the frame, bowed walls, a fisheye curve, a leaning building, a warped hand. It keeps the person, the expression, the pose, the clothing, the background and the light. Nothing is added or removed. ### Lens distortion vs perspective distortion

Lens distortion comes from the glass. Barrel distortion bows straight lines outward, and pincushion distortion pinches them inward. Perspective distortion comes from where the camera stood. Hold the phone close and near things look big; tilt it up and buildings lean. The close-selfie nose is perspective distortion, which is why a lens profile can’t fix it.

### Barrel vs pincushion distortion

Barrel distortion bends lines outward, like the sides of a barrel. It’s common on wide and ultra-wide lenses. Pincushion distortion bends them inward toward the center. It’s common at the long end of a zoom lens. Both are fixed here by naming the line that should be straight.

### Why doesn’t Lightroom or Photoshop lens correction fix my face?

A lens profile undoes the known curve of one lens: barrel, pincushion and dark corners. A face stretched at the edge of a wide shot, or a nose enlarged by a close camera, isn’t part of that curve. So it stays after the profile is applied. That’s the case this tool is for.

### How do I correct lens distortion in a photo?

### Why do I look different in pictures than in the mirror?

Mostly distance. A phone held at arm’s length sits close to your face, so your nose looks bigger and your ears and jaw look smaller. Your mirror is also flipped left to right, and that’s the face you’re used to. Fix the close-camera effect here; to undo the flip, mirror the photo in your phone’s editor.

### Why does my nose look bigger in selfies?

Because it’s the closest thing to the camera. A study in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery found that a selfie from about 12 inches makes the base of the nose look around 30% wider than a photo from 5 feet. Stepping back and zooming in avoids it. This tool fixes it after the fact.

### Is the front camera accurate?

Not at arm’s length. The front camera is wide and close to your face, so it enlarges what’s nearest and shrinks what’s farther away. A photo from 5 feet or more, taken with a normal lens, is closer to how people see you.

### Does the 0.5 lens distort your face?

Yes, when your face is close or near the edge of the frame. The 0.5 lens is ultra-wide, so it stretches what’s near it and bends what sits at the sides. Keep faces near the middle, or fix the stretch here.

### What is barrel distortion?

Barrel distortion makes straight lines bow outward from the center, like the sides of a barrel. It’s common on wide-angle and phone ultra-wide lenses. Here you remove barrel distortion by tapping “Walls or lines bow out”.

### What is pincushion distortion?

The opposite of barrel distortion: straight lines bend inward toward the center. It shows up at the long end of zoom lenses. Name the line that should be straight and the fix will straighten it.

### Can it fix a stretched face at the edge of a group photo?

Yes. Pick “Faces stretched at the edges”. Wide lenses stretch people near the sides of the frame, and a standard lens profile doesn’t correct it. The fix brings them back in line with the people in the middle.

### How do I straighten a building that leans in a photo?

Pick “Building leans back”, or say which lines should be straight. Tilting the camera up makes buildings lean in, which is called the keystone effect. Expect a little trimming at the edges, as with any perspective correction.

### Can you un-distort a fisheye photo?

Mostly, yes. Pick “Fisheye curve” and the curb, poles and horizon are flattened. A full circular fisheye is extreme by design, so results vary more. Compare before you download.

Only if they said yes. Use a photo of you, or of people who agreed. GoStudio.ai blocks nude and sexual images and won’t help make fake or harmful images of real people.
