## Models

- **Lite** (LITE) — Pick a size up to 4K, or scale 2x-10x. Best value.
- **Pro** (PRO) — Scale 2x-4x for the most real detail, up to 512 MP.
- **Advanced** (ADVANCED) — Redraws the photo at ~4 MP and keeps the face.

Supported uploads: PNG, JPG, WEBP or HEIC — up to 40 MB.

## How to Upscale an Image in 3 Steps

To upscale an image, an AI image upscaler increases its resolution — it adds real pixels and rebuilds the detail that belongs in them, rather than stretching the pixels you already have. It changes the image's SIZE; improving how it looks at its current size is enhancing, a different job.

### 1. Upload your image

Drop in any PNG, JPG, JPEG or WEBP up to 40 MB — a phone photo, a screenshot, a web image or an old low-res file. It needs to be at least 512 pixels on both sides.

### 2. AI upscales details

Our model reconstructs the missing pixels from your image content, adding realistic texture and sharpness, not just stretched pixels.

## What Is AI Image Upscaling Used For?

- **Landscapes — Upscale Landscape Photos to 4K** Upscale a landscape or travel image 2x to 4x, to a crisp 4K (about 8 MP). Sharper skies, horizons, and terrain that stay true to the original scene.
- **Dark & Underexposed — Upscale and Brighten a Dark Photo** Shots taken indoors or after sunset are usually small AND dark, because the same conditions cause both. Shadows are lifted and the image is enlarged in one pass, so the grain hiding in the dark areas is separated out as it is brightened instead of being magnified into blotches. Faces are left alone.
- **Portraits — Photo Upscaler for Portraits** Upscale portraits 2x to 4x for a print-ready 2K to 4K (4 to 8 MP). Recover skin texture, hair strands, and sharp eyes while faces stay natural and lifelike.
- **Illustration — Upscale an Image of Art or Illustration** Take digital art and illustrations 2x to 4x up to 4K with clean lines and vivid colour. Ideal for AI-generated art that needs added detail and realism.
- **Nature — Upscale Nature & Wildlife Photos** Enlarge nature and wildlife shots 2x to 4x, up to 4K (about 8 MP). Crisp foliage, water, and fur detail that looks realistic, never over-sharpened.

## Upscale any image to crisp 4K

Upscale portraits, landscapes, products, and illustrations to print-ready 4K, crisp edges, real detail, no pixelation or plastic artifacts.

### Upscale and Sharpen Interior Photos

Real-estate and interior shots are taken in poor light and go soft. Upscaling rebuilds crisp edges on furniture, walls and décor — the detail a listing is judged on, at the size a listing actually displays.

![Desk with a laptop and plant in a styled room, crisp and detailed — after AI upscaling](https://r1.gostudio.ai/ai-tools/sharpen/room-after.jpg)
![The same room shot soft and low-contrast — before AI upscaling](https://r1.gostudio.ai/ai-tools/sharpen/room-before.jpg)

### Intricate Machinery and Fine Detail

Engineering, product and macro shots live or die on the small stuff — threads, seams, etched lettering. The upscaler rebuilds that detail as it scales rather than smoothing it into a blur.

![Close-up of machinery with threads and seams clearly resolved — after AI upscaling](https://r1.gostudio.ai/ai-tools/sharpen/machine-after.jpg)
![The same machinery soft and low-resolution — before AI upscaling](https://r1.gostudio.ai/ai-tools/sharpen/machine-before.jpg)

### Enlarge Nature and Macro Photos

Petals, insect wings and leaf veins are exactly where a plain resize gives itself away. As an image enlarger the AI rebuilds that fine structure, so a macro shot holds up printed large.

![The same flowers at low resolution — before AI enlargement](https://r1.gostudio.ai/ai-tools/enlarge/flowers-before.jpg)

### Enlarge Pet and Family Photos

Fur and whiskers are the hardest thing to fake at scale — a resize turns them into mush. Enlarge image detail with AI and individual strands survive, which is what makes a pet portrait worth framing.

![The same cat photo at low resolution — before AI enlargement](https://r1.gostudio.ai/ai-tools/enlarge/cat-before.jpg)

### Denoise Image Grain on Portraits

High-ISO grain on skin is the one artefact upscaling makes worse if untreated. The model separates noise from real texture first, so pores and hair stay while the speckle goes — no waxy, smeared skin.

![The same man with heavy high-ISO grain — before AI noise removal and upscaling](https://r1.gostudio.ai/ai-tools/denoise/person-noised.jpg)

### Refine Midjourney and DALL-E Art

Generated images come out at render size, below what a print or a large display wants. A creative upscale adds the texture and micro-detail the original render never contained instead of stretching what is there.

![The same illustrated parrots at generation size — before creative AI upscaling](https://r1.gostudio.ai/ai-tools/creative-upscale/parrots-before.png)

### Polish Concept and Game Art

Concept boards and game art are judged at full screen, where flat colour and soft edges show immediately. Upscaling sharpens line work and adds surface detail without redrawing the piece.

![The same concept art soft and low-resolution — before creative AI upscaling](https://r1.gostudio.ai/ai-tools/creative-upscale/neon-boy-before.png)

### Upscale Old & Low-Res Photos

Bring blurry, low-resolution and old scanned photos up to 10x. AI rebuilds faces, edges, and fine detail so they look sharp instead of stretched.

![Woman sitting in a field of tall grass, surrounded by trees in the background — before AI upscaling](https://r1.gostudio.ai/ImageUpscale/simple-before.png)

### Rebuild Real Texture & Detail

AI reconstructs skin, hair, fabric, and nature texture from your image content, so upscaled photos stay naturally detailed instead of soft or plastic.

![Little boy with curly hair wearing a blue shirt, standing in front of a blurred background — AI upscaling](https://r1.gostudio.ai/ImageUpscale/detailed.jpg)

### Portrait Upscaling for Prints

Upscale portrait and headshot photos to poster and print size while keeping natural skin texture, individual hair strands, and razor-sharp eyes.

## What is GoStudio.ai's AI image upscaler?

GoStudio.ai's AI image upscaler is a one-click online tool that increases a photo's resolution up to 10x, to a maximum of about 96 megapixels. It is a PRECISION upscaler: it reconstructs the texture and detail the original pixels already imply, sharpening edges and filling in what is missing, instead of stretching the image the way a basic resize does — and instead of inventing detail that was never in the shot. That is the difference from generative, diffusion-based upscaling, which is the right tool for artwork and the wrong one for a photograph of a person. It works on portraits, landscapes, product shots and prints, and outputs print-ready files.

Rather not take our word for it? We ran 31 photos, from 0.05 MP to 17 MP, through five models and measured what came back — two of them return fewer pixels than you gave them. Read the [upscale and enhance benchmark](https://www.gostudio.ai/blog/upscale-enhance-benchmark), or browse [real before-and-afters](https://www.gostudio.ai/examples#upscale) from this tool.

### How far can GoStudio.ai upscale an image?

To 96 megapixels, about 9800 x 9800 pixels. Two controls get you there: a target size — 720p, 1080p, 1440p or 2160p, which returns exactly that resolution whatever you upload — or a scale factor from 2x to 10x, which multiplies the photo you have. A small photo can take the full 10x; a 24 megapixel photo has room for 2x, because both land on the same 96 megapixel ceiling. The scale options shown are already narrowed to what your own image can reach, so anything offered will run. Files go up to 40 MB and must be at least 512 pixels on both sides.

### Should I upscale this image or enhance it?

Upscaling changes the SIZE. It increases the image resolution — a 1000px photo becomes 4000px — so it stays sharp instead of going pixelated when you enlarge it, crop into it, or print it. Enhancing changes the QUALITY at the size you already have: colour, lighting, sharpness and noise. If the file is too small for what you need, upscale it. If it is big enough but looks flat, dull or soft, enhance it. Plenty of photos want both, and GoStudio.ai carries the image straight from one tool to the other.

### How is AI upscaling different from resizing an image?

Resizing simply stretches existing pixels, which makes an image blurry or blocky at larger sizes. GoStudio.ai's AI upscaler generates new detail based on what the image contains, so the result stays sharp as it gets bigger.

### Does upscaling make an image good enough to print?

Yes. Upscaling raises a low-DPI screen image to a high-DPI file, which is what large posters, canvas prints, and product displays need. GoStudio.ai targets sharp 300+ DPI output for print use.

### What image types work best?

Portraits, landscapes, e-commerce product shots, and clean-line illustrations or anime all upscale well because the AI adapts to the content type rather than applying one fixed filter.

### GoStudio.ai AI Image Upscaler vs other options

- ■**vs an AI image enhancer:** An enhancer improves how a photo LOOKS — colour, lighting, sharpness, noise — at whatever size it already is. An upscaler changes the size itself, adding resolution so the photo survives being enlarged or printed. Enhancing a small image gives you a better-looking small image; it does not make it printable. Different jobs, and GoStudio.ai hands the photo from one to the other in a click.
- ■**vs basic image resizing:** A resize tool enlarges pixels and loses sharpness. GoStudio.ai reconstructs real detail, so the upscaled image looks crisp instead of stretched.
- ■**vs Photoshop upscaling:** Photoshop can upscale but needs the desktop app and manual settings. GoStudio.ai upscales up to 10x in the browser in one click, no software to install.
- ■**vs generic AI upscalers:** GoStudio.ai is one tool in a full studio: after upscaling you can sharpen, denoise, restore, or enhance the same image without switching apps.

## AI Image Upscaler: FAQ

Everything about upscaling images with AI.

### Will upscaling change the face or the look of my photo?

No. The upscaler adds resolution to the photo you uploaded — it reconstructs texture and edges that were already implied by the pixels, rather than redrawing the picture. Faces, colours and composition stay as photographed. That is the difference between an upscaler and a generative model asked to make a bigger version: the second invents, and the face comes back subtly wrong.

### Can it brighten a dark photo while upscaling it?

Yes, and they are worth doing together. Low light produces small, dark, grainy files all at once, so brightening in an editor afterwards lifts the shadows and the hidden grain with them. Doing it in the same pass means the noise is separated from real texture as the photo is enlarged and lifted. Faces, colours and composition are still left as photographed.

### Is this a creative upscaler or a precision one?

Precision. These models rebuild the detail your pixels already imply and hold the picture as it was shot — faces, colours and composition come back unchanged, which is what you want for a portrait, a product shot or a print. They will not invent content that was never in the file, so a half-hidden face does not become a whole one and unreadable text does not become readable. That restraint is also why they work on AI art: a render from Midjourney or DALL-E gains real texture and micro-detail at print size without the picture being redrawn into something you did not generate.

### How do I upscale an image?

Upload the photo and pick a scale — 2x or 4x. The AI rebuilds detail as it enlarges rather than stretching the pixels you already have, so edges stay clean instead of going soft and blocky. The larger file downloads at full quality with no watermark.

### How do I increase image resolution without losing quality?

To increase image resolution you have to add pixels, and the question is what goes in them. Stretching copies neighbouring pixels and the picture gets softer the bigger it goes. An AI upscaler predicts the detail that would have been there — texture, edges, fine lines — so a 1000px photo taken to 4000px looks photographed at that size rather than blown up.

### What is an AI image upscaler?

An AI image upscaler increases a photo's resolution while adding realistic detail. You upload an image to GoStudio.ai and its AI reconstructs missing pixels from the content, so the result looks sharp rather than stretched.

### How much can I upscale an image?

Up to 10x, depending on where your photo starts. Every result is capped at about 96 megapixels, so a small photo can take the full 10x while a large one has room for 2x or 3x — the options you are shown are already narrowed to what your image can actually do. You can also upscale to a target size instead: 720p, 1080p, 1440p or 2160p.

### Will the upscaled image look natural?

Yes. The AI reconstructs pixels based on image content, adding detail rather than just stretching existing pixels, so results look natural.

### Is it suitable for printing?

Yes. Upscaling is essential for printing. It converts low-DPI screen images into high-DPI files suitable for large posters or canvas prints.

### Can I upscale illustrations and anime?

Yes. We have specialised models that work exceptionally well on clean lines and flat colours found in anime, cartoons, and digital illustrations.

### What formats are supported?

PNG, JPG, JPEG, WEBP and HEIC, up to 40 MB. The upscaled image downloads at full resolution, unmodified — nothing is resized or re-compressed on the way out.

### Can I upscale an image to 4K?

Yes, and well past it. Pick 2160p from the target sizes and any photo comes back at 4K — 3840 x 2176, about 8.4 megapixels — whatever it started as. If you want to go further, the scale factors run to 10x and the ceiling is 96 megapixels, which is roughly 9800 x 9800. 4K is the middle of the range here, not the top of it.

### Can I upscale an image to 8K?

Yes. 8K is 7680 x 4320, about 33 megapixels, and results here go to 96 megapixels — close to three times that. Use the scale factor rather than a target size: the named targets stop at 2160p, so a 2 megapixel photo at 6x or a 6 megapixel photo at 4x is what takes you past 8K. The options shown are already filtered to what your own photo can reach.

### What resolution do I need for printing?

Printing wants about 300 pixels per inch, so multiply the print size in inches by 300. A 12 x 18 inch print needs roughly 3600 x 5400 — about 19 megapixels. An A2 poster wants around 30. A phone photo is usually 8 to 12 megapixels, which is a good 8 x 10 and short for anything larger, and that gap is what upscaling closes. At 96 megapixels the ceiling here covers a 30 x 40 inch print at full 300 DPI.

### What size image can I upscale?

At least 512 pixels on BOTH sides — a 400px-tall photo is refused however wide it is — and up to 40 MB as a file. At the other end, around 24 megapixels (roughly 6000 x 4000) is the largest that still has room to grow, because every result is capped at 96 megapixels. Between those two, anything works.

### How large can the upscaled image be?

Up to about 96 megapixels, which is roughly 9800 x 9800 pixels. How far your own photo can go depends on where it starts: a 600 x 600 image can take the full 10x, a 2 megapixel photo tops out near 6x, and a 24 megapixel photo has room for 2x. The scale options you are shown are already filtered to what your photo can actually do, so anything offered will work. Large jobs take longer — a result near the ceiling can take about two minutes.

### Which upscaling model should I use?

We measured all five modes on the same 31 photos, from 0.05 MP to 17 MP, and published every result. Lite and Pro are true upscalers: set to 2x per side they returned a median of four times the input pixels. Pro never added anything the original did not already imply and recovers more real detail at the same size; Lite held to that on every photo but one, a 1906 newspaper where it changed headline letters. The enhance modes re-render onto a fixed canvas instead, which transforms a small photo and shrinks a large one. If your file is too small, use an upscaling mode and raise the scale factor. [See the benchmark](https://www.gostudio.ai/blog/upscale-enhance-benchmark)

### Does AI upscaling invent detail that was not in the photo?

It depends entirely on the mode, which is why we tested it rather than asserting it. Across 31 photos Pro reconstructed only what the existing pixels implied, and Lite did on all but one — on a 1906 newspaper page it turned “URGENT” into “ORGENE”. The re-rendering modes drew in detail the source could not have held — on a 0.12 MP photograph of spices they rendered hundreds of individually defined grains, and on a plain fried egg two of them added pepper and browned edges that are not in the original. For documents, archives or product listings that is a reason to stay on an upscaling mode — and for text, on Pro. Every frame is published at full size with a native-pixel crop, so you can check the claim rather than take it. [See the benchmark](https://www.gostudio.ai/blog/upscale-enhance-benchmark)

### Can I see real before-and-after examples?

Yes. The examples gallery holds unedited GoStudio.ai upscales grouped by subject — portraits, product shots, landscapes and text — each as a slider you drag to sweep between the original and the result. Nothing is cropped or re-touched to flatter the output. [Browse upscaler examples](https://www.gostudio.ai/examples#upscale)

### Is it free?

New GoStudio.ai accounts get 10 free credits to upscale images, no credit card required. Paid plans start at $3.90 for higher volume, with local pricing in most countries.

### Are the 10 free credits available to everyone?

Free credits go to eligible new accounts. We use automated behavioral checks, powered by a third-party trust system, to decide eligibility before credits are issued. We don't share the exact criteria publicly, because doing so would defeat the purpose. Why the gate? GoStudio.ai started as a self-funded indie product. We offered free credits openly so anyone could try it. A small number of users abused this, temporary emails, multiple accounts, policy-violating content. To protect the product for the community that genuinely uses it, we introduced these checks. Most legitimate new users are unaffected. If you're flagged as ineligible and believe that's a mistake, email us at support@gostudio.ai. We review every request and will issue credits manually if it checks out. If you'd rather just get started, our plans begin at $3.90 and are available at local pricing in most countries.
