BLUR TYPES

Five kinds of motion blur, and when to use each

Each one copies a real camera trick. In all five, the person you care about stays sharp.

A man in a long coat crossing the street while the taxi and buildings behind him streak sideways in panning blur.

Panning blur: the background streaks, the person stays sharp

A photographer gets this by following the subject with the camera at a slow shutter speed. The background smears along the line of travel, so the photo reads as speed. Use it for a motion blur background behind a cyclist, runner or skater crossing the frame.

A mountain biker racing down a dirt track toward the camera, with zoom burst streaks flying out from the center.

Zoom burst: pull the eye to someone coming at you

Streaks fly out from the center of the frame, as if the lens zoomed while the shutter was open. It’s also called radial blur or zoom blur. Use it when a rider or runner is heading straight at the camera.

A smiling red-haired woman carrying flowers, her hair and the street in motion while her face stays sharp.

Moving limbs: blur the arms, hair and fabric, keep the face

Only the parts that move get the blur: swinging arms, hair, a skirt, a scarf. The face and everything still stay crisp. Use it for dance, fashion and walking shots.

A woman in a cream sweater standing sharp in a street crossing while the crowd around her blurs into soft ghosts.

Crowd ghosting: a long exposure filter for one still person

In a long exposure, people walking past turn into soft ghosts while someone standing still stays sharp. This gives you that look without a tripod or a 2-second shutter. Use it to make one person stand out in a busy street, station or market.

Two years ago we spent thousands on branded images and professional headshots. Then I found GoStudio.ai — it helps you look like yourself, just on your best, most confident day.

Sometimes, you don't need a photo shoot to look like your future self. You just need a visual story that says, 'I made it.' That's where GoStudio.ai can help.

The founder personally fixed all of my photos. Her commitment to giving everyone an excellent experience makes her a cut above many others. I have to give the experience 5 stars.

The images look so close to my original that if I didn't tell you they were AI-generated, you'd probably never notice. AI is your assistant — not your identity.

Kanika personally hopped on a call to help. That level of professionalism and kindness really impressed me. The AI photo is beautiful — GoStudio.ai makes professional identity accessible.

GoStudio.ai helped me show up as who I'm actually becoming — not who I thought I was supposed to be. It replaced two photographers and a retoucher for our catalog.

What is a motion blur effect?

A motion blur effect is the streak a moving subject leaves in a photo when something moves while the shutter is open. An AI motion blur filter adds that streak to a sharp photo afterward, in one direction, so a still photo shows speed. GoStudio.ai’s motion blur effect gives you five camera techniques (panning, zoom burst, moving limbs, crowd ghosting and night light trails) and keeps the person sharp with no masking. It’s part of GoStudio.ai, the one-click AI studio for people, pets and products. It’s also called a motion blur filter, motion blur adder, motion blur editor or speed blur.

Keep going in the same studio. Soften the background evenly for a portrait look with Blur Background, fix a photo that came out blurry with Image Deblur, change the light to golden hour or night with Relighting, and clear out photobombers before you add the blur with Remove People from Photos.

Night light trails: streaks of light behind someone at night

Car lights and city lights stretch into long lines, the way a long exposure records traffic. Use it for night portraits, city walks and holiday-light photos.

Where people use a motion blur photo

Sports and action shots: a fast shutter freezes a runner, cyclist or skater but kills the sense of speed, and panning blur shows how fast they were going. Instagram posts and profile pictures: moving limbs for an outfit post, or crowd ghosting for a city photo that stands out in the feed. Street and travel portraits: turn a holiday photo on a busy street into a motion blur portrait, where you stay sharp while the city rushes past. Dance, fashion and wedding photos: show a twirl, a skirt in motion or a first dance without a slow shutter and ten failed tries.

For brands and photographers

Sportswear and fitness brands can show running shoes, activewear or a bike in motion, on a model who agreed to the shoot. Photographers who got the moment at 1/1000 s, where it looks frozen, can add the motion afterward instead of reshooting. Editing a whole catalog or gallery? Use the GoStudio API or connect with us.

Adds motion blur. Doesn’t remove it.

It changes the background, the moving limbs or the crowd, in the direction you pick. It keeps the person’s face and body sharp. It can’t fix a photo that’s already blurry; for that, use Image Deblur. It works best with a sharp photo with some detail behind the subject. A plain wall or empty sky has nothing to streak.

Motion blur effect vs other options

  • ■vs Photoshop Motion Blur or Path Blur: You set an angle and a distance, then mask the person by hand so they stay sharp. Here you pick a blur and a direction, and the person stays sharp on their own.
  • ■vs shooting it in camera: A real pan needs a slow shutter, a steady swing and many tries, and the moment has to still be happening. This works on a photo you already took.
  • ■vs a blur slider: A slider blurs in one straight line, often over the whole photo. Zoom bursts, moving limbs and ghosted crowds need more than one line.
  • ■vs background blur: Background blur softens everything behind the person evenly, with no direction. Motion blur runs one way, which is what reads as movement. For a soft portrait background, use Blur Background.
