WHAT IT FIXES

Photo distortion, fixed in one click

Close cameras and wide lenses bend faces and lines. The fix puts the shapes back and keeps everything else the same.

Fix selfie distortion: the nose that looks too big

Hold a phone at arm’s length and the closest thing, your nose, looks bigger than it is. A selfie from about 12 inches can make the base of the nose look around 30% wider than a photo from 5 feet. The fix redraws your face as if the phone had stepped back, with the same expression.

Remove barrel distortion: walls and ceilings that bow out

Ultra-wide phone lenses bend straight lines outward, like a barrel. Walls, ceilings and window frames come back straight, and the furniture stays where it was.

Fisheye correction for GoPro and action-cam photos

Fisheye lenses curve every line around the middle on purpose. The fix flattens the curb, the poles and the horizon, and keeps the subject in place.

Image perspective correction: buildings that lean back

Tilt your phone up at a building and its sides lean in toward the top. The fix makes walls stand up straight again. Expect a little of the edges to be cropped, as with any perspective fix.

What is lens distortion?

Lens distortion is when a photo bends shapes that are straight or in proportion in real life. A close phone camera makes the nearest feature, often the nose, look too big. Wide lenses stretch faces at the edges and bow straight lines. Lens distortion correction is the edit that puts those shapes back. GoStudio.ai’s distortion correction does it in one click from a short description, so the same edit fixes a face, a group photo or a room. The person, pose and background stay as they were. It’s part of GoStudio.ai, the one-click AI studio for people, pets and products. It’s also called a distortion remover, camera distortion correction, or undistorting an image.

Keep going in the same studio. Brighten eyes and even out skin after the face is fixed with Portrait Enhance, see the same photo from a new camera angle with Perspective, add the person who missed the group shot with Group Photo, sharpen a photo that came out soft with Image Deblur, make the fixed photo bigger for print with Upscale, or recreate a template with your fixed photo from Templates.

Fixes the distortion. Keeps the photo.

It changes the shape of whatever the camera or lens bent: a nose, a face at the edge of the frame, bowed walls, a fisheye curve, a leaning building, a warped hand. It keeps the person, the expression, the pose, the clothing, the background and the light. Nothing is added or removed. It can’t sharpen a blurry photo (use Image Deblur), change the camera angle (use Perspective), or match a lens’s exact lab profile for technical work. For measured corrections, use the lens profile in your photo editor. Straightening lines can trim a little from the edges of the frame, so leave some room around your subject when you can.

Lens distortion vs perspective distortion

Lens distortion comes from the glass. Barrel distortion bows straight lines outward, and pincushion distortion pinches them inward. Perspective distortion comes from where the camera stood. Hold the phone close and near things look big; tilt it up and buildings lean. The close-selfie nose is perspective distortion, which is why a lens profile can’t fix it.

Barrel vs pincushion distortion

Barrel distortion bends lines outward, like the sides of a barrel. It’s common on wide and ultra-wide lenses. Pincushion distortion bends them inward toward the center. It’s common at the long end of a zoom lens. Both are fixed here by naming the line that should be straight.

Why doesn’t Lightroom or Photoshop lens correction fix my face?

A lens profile undoes the known curve of one lens: barrel, pincushion and dark corners. A face stretched at the edge of a wide shot, or a nose enlarged by a close camera, isn’t part of that curve. So it stays after the profile is applied. That’s the case this tool is for.

Correcting lens distortion vs other options

  • ■vs Lightroom or Photoshop lens correction: Exact for lines on a known lens. It doesn’t fix faces, and it needs editing software and some practice.
  • ■vs Liquify by hand: Pushing a face back into shape takes skill, and small mistakes add new distortion. Here you tap what looks wrong and compare.
  • ■vs grid and slider tools: Good for one straight edge. They warp the whole frame, faces included.
  • ■vs re-taking the photo: Stepping back and zooming in is the best fix when you can. When the moment is gone, fix the photo you have.
